Hi Fi Snake
One-Line Brief
A web-first arcade game combining Snake's self-growing danger, Archero's room-by-room upgrades, and Pac-Man 256's neon spectacle, where your growing tail is both your obstacle and the key to unlocking the next room.
Portfolio Setup
* Portfolio Tier: Retest
* Portfolio Anchor: Hi Fi Snake (indicated by Poki as a potential candidate)
* Primary Genre: Simulation / Arcade Survival
* Experience Goals: Feel constant progress, feel instantly powerful, feel in control
* Persona Fit: Web Gen-Z Drifter (13+, mobile/desktop browser, chromebook, low-end PC). Designed for 2-5 minute bursts, avoiding exit triggers like confusion, slow loading, or excessive reading through immediate visual readability and short, self-contained room challenges.
Reference Trinity
* Primary Reference: Snake (Arcade survival, mobile)
Intended Contribution*: Self-created danger, grow, and avoid collision. Creates a deep and enduring game from an extremely small number of rules where every success changes the player's physical state and makes the next decision more dangerous.
* Secondary Reference: Archero (Casual action roguelite, Mobile)
Intended Contribution*: Room-by-room upgrades and progression. Turns an accessible control scheme into a long-lasting progression game with short, easy-to-understand rooms and accumulating upgrade choices.
* Tertiary Reference: Pac-Man 256 (Endless arcade maze, Console)
Intended Contribution*: Neon arcade spectacle and visual feedback. Modernizes a recognizable formula with isometric presentation, bright effects, satisfying collection feedback, and constant forward pressure.
How The References Come Together
Hi Fi Snake combines Snake’s self-created danger, Archero’s room-by-room upgrades, and Pac-Man 256’s neon arcade spectacle. The twist is that the growing tail is simultaneously the player’s obstacle, progression resource, and key to the next room. The player must grow a long enough trail to open the next gate, but every piece collected makes navigating the room more dangerous.
Core Loop
Collect pieces -> Grow a more dangerous trail -> Survive long enough to open the next gate -> Cash the trail into a beat-synced gate explosion -> Choose an upgrade that changes the rest of the run.
Value Curve And ERRC Matrix
| Attribute | Primary | Secondary | Tertiary | New | Dominant Reference | ERRC | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Immediate Visual Readability | 5 | 3 | 2 | 5 | Primary | Preserve | We had several issues in past games where the persona doesn't understand the game. They can control their character but have a hard time understanding what to do and why. |
| Self-Generated Obstacle & Difficulty | 4 | 0 | 2 | 4 | Primary | Preserve | Conflict is very clear and inevitable, also doesn't create any sense of injustice or frustration when they lose (i lost because i am good). |
| Frequent Run-Based Upgrades | 0 | 4 | 3 | 4 | Secondary | Create | The frequent sentiment of progression is important and this makes it frequent and very visible. This will be created using the simple Upgrades system we already have in Unity projects - almost no coding. |
| Visually Satisfying Collection & Progression Feedback | 1 | 3 | 4 | 3 | Tertiary | Raise | The game builds on top of snake mechanics but with visuals of pac-man 256 that is more modern, unique and tailored to a younger audience. The visuals are already set and have several good assets already present on the vault. |
| Short, Self-Contained Room Challenges | 0 | 4 | 1 | 4 | Secondary | Create | Easy to understand challenges is essential for the persona. We had several issues with readability of the context in other games. Also, it is simple enough to add in the levels without complicating the design. |
| Clear Short-Term Goals & Milestones | 2 | 3 | 2 | 4 | Secondary | Raise | Bite-sized goals gives that "just one more" sense because it feels like it can be done in a few seconds / minutes. Longer goals make the player pause when he knows it will take too long. This system is already present in the old Hi Fi Snake from the vault. |

Design Pillars
* Self-Generated Danger & Progression: The tail is both the obstacle and the resource. (Derived from Snake reference & Phase 3 Core Conflict)
* Immediate Visual Readability: No tutorials or text needed; gameplay is instantly understood. (Derived from Web Gen-Z Drifter persona & Phase 3.5 Attribute 1)
* Bite-Sized Progression Cadence: Short, self-contained rooms with frequent upgrades. (Derived from Archero reference & Phase 3.5 Attribute 5 & 6)
* Neon Arcade Spectacle: High-energy visual feedback and beat-synced moments. (Derived from Pac-Man 256 reference & Phase 3 TikTok Moment)
Implementation Priorities
First Playable Objective
Demonstrate the core loop of moving a robot, collecting pieces to grow a tail, navigating a single room, using the tail to unlock a gate, and transitioning to a second room with a basic upgrade choice.
Must-Have Systems
| System | Why It Exists | Derived From |
|---|---|---|
| Movement & Tail Growth System | Player moves a robot head; collecting pellets spawns tail segments that follow the head. Tail collision triggers failure. | Snake reference, Core Conflict |
| Gate & Progression System | Gate requires a specific tail length/resource count to unlock, triggering a gate-burst explosion. | Phase 3 Core Conflict, TikTok Moment |
| Room-Based Structure | Gameplay is structured into distinct, quickly completable rooms or segments. | Archero reference, Attribute 5 |
| Run-Based Upgrade System | Presents choices of temporary upgrades upon clearing a room. | Archero reference, Attribute 3 |
| Visual Feedback System | Neon aesthetics, collection feedback, and beat-synced gate explosion. | Pac-Man 256 reference, Attribute 4 |
Deferred Systems
* Daily Return Hook: Three-room remix with special modifiers and rotating cosmetic rewards.
* Cosmetic Expression System: Character, trail style, color palette, and gate-burst effect customization.
* Advanced Upgrade Pool: Complex upgrade synergies and room layouts.
Known Risks
* Tail Navigation Frustration: If the tail grows too fast or rooms are too small, players might feel trapped too quickly, violating the "feel_in_control" experience goal.
* Visual Clutter: High-energy neon effects must not compromise the "Immediate Visual Readability" required by the Web Gen-Z Drifter persona.
Implementation Notes For Coding Agent
* First Playable Target: Build a simple 2D/isometric arena where a player controls a robot. Spawning pellets grow the tail. A locked gate requires a tail length of X to open. When the player touches the gate with the required length, the tail is consumed in a visual burst, the gate opens, and the player moves to Room 2 where they choose between two simple upgrades (e.g., speed boost, smaller tail segment size).
* Core Entities: Player Robot (Head), Tail Segments, Collectible Pellets, Gate, Upgrade Selector UI.
* Scope Constraints: Avoid complex physics, multiplayer, persistent progression, or detailed narrative. Keep assets simple (neon primitives/sprites).
* Ask User Before Deciding:
* The exact control scheme (e.g., grid-based 4-directional movement vs. free 360-degree movement).
* The camera perspective (isometric like Pac-Man 256 or top-down like classic Snake).
* The exact behavior of the tail when unlocking a gate (does it consume the entire tail, or just the required amount?).
